It All Starts With A Sparkle. The fact that Moissanite has more brilliance and fire than diamonds, and is harder than rubies, sapphires and emeralds, is just the beginning of why people love Moissanite. Moissanite is, quite simply, the ultimate unique jewel that speaks to people with incomparable fire and brilliance. Known as the newest "it" jewel to have in your fashion-forward collection, people all over the world are discovering just how wonderful, and different, Moissanite really is as they embrace its story of being "born from the stars." This extraordinary jewel is different in many ways over standard mined gemstones, like diamond, emerald, ruby, garnets, opal, and others.

Moissanite...The History. Born from the stars, perfected on earth. More than 50,000 years ago, a shimmering mineral of uncommon brilliance came to earth in a meteorite. In 1893, Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan, an eminent French scientist who would later win the Nobel Prize for chemistry, was examining geological samples brought to him from the meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona when he observed brilliant sparkling crystals. Dr. Moissan's research identified them as a new mineral find - silcon carbide, whose chemical composition is SiC (diamonds are made from carbon). In 1905, well-known Tiffany & Co. gem expert and mineralogist, George Kunz suggested the jewel be named moissanite in Dr. Moissan's honor.

This stunning jewel is extremely rare, and almost impossible to find in nature. So rare, in fact, that the dream of using it in jewelry was an impossibility until man discovered a way to create and craft these incredible silicon carbide crystals here on earth. It was a blend of art and science that brought Charles & Colvard created Moissanite to life. In the 1980s, Cree, Inc., a company engaged in producing semi-conductors, developed a proprietary process for producing large crystals of silicon carbide... that is, moissanite. In the summer of 1995, a master gem cutter examined samples of these laboratory-created crystals and suggested to the firm's management that, if properly cut, the material could be faceted into a uniquely new and beautiful jewel. And so, in 1995 the company was incorporated and embarked on extensive research and development to perfect Moissanite. In 1998, Moissanite officially debuted. And today with proprietary patents for moissanite's manufacturing process and its use as a jewel Charles & Colvard is not only the leader in moissanite but is the exclusive worldwide source of these extraordinary jewels.

More Color & Sparkle. Moissanite's remarkable dispersion (fire) breaks white light into the spectral (rainbow) colors more than any popular gemstone. In fact, fire can be measured scientifically and with a dispersion of 0.104 moissanite has nearly 2.4 times the fire of diamond. Fire is the Color!
Moissanite's superior brilliance and luster reflect more white light back to the viewer  than any other popular gemstone including diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. In fact, brilliance can also be measured scientifically and is directly influenced by a jewel's refractive index. At a refractive index of 2.65-2.69 moissanite has nearly 10% more brilliance than diamond at 2.42. Brilliance is the Sparkle!

Standing The Test Of Time. Moissanite is extremely resistant to scratching, abrasion, breaking and chipping. Moissanite is built for the real world. At 9.25 Mohs it is second in hardness only to diamond and incredibly tough. It's heat resistance properties are superior to many other gemstones which means your Moissanite jewelry is easily repaired and maintained. While Charles & Colvard created Moissanite is durable, it, like all other gemstones, is not indestructible. Care for your moissanite jewelry just as you would other fine jewelry, taking precautions not to wear rings and bracelets when doing rough work with your hands to avoid sharp blows. Moissanite jewelry can be safely cleaned the same way you would other fine jewelry.
